Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before your first canyon adventure.

  • What is canyoneering?
Canyoneering (also called canyoning) is the sport of traveling through canyons using a combination of hiking, rappelling, climbing, and sometimes wading. Think of it as nature's obstacle course. Southern Utah is home to some of the most stunning slot canyons on earth, and canyoneering is the best way to experience them up close.
  • Do I need experience to go canyoneering?
Not at all. The vast majority of our guests have never canyoneered before. Our guides teach you everything you need to know on the spot — how to use the gear, how to rappel safely, and what to expect at every step. If you can hike for a few hours, you can canyoneer with us.
  • Can beginners and first-timers really do this?
Yes — our tours are specifically designed for beginners. We start with simple skills in a safe environment before tackling the bigger features. Our guides are patient, experienced teachers, and we move at your group's pace. You'll be surprised what you're capable of with the right support.
  • Can my kids do this? What's the minimum age?
Half-day tours are open to ages 7 and up. Full-day tours are open to ages 10 and up. Kids often do better than the adults — they're fearless and love the challenge. If you have a younger child you'd like to bring, reach out and we'll see what we can work out for a private family tour.
  • How fit do I need to be?
You should be comfortable walking 3–5 miles on uneven terrain with some elevation gain. You don't need to be in athletic shape — just generally healthy and able to handle a moderate hike. If you have a specific concern (knee, back, etc.), give us a call and we'll talk through whether the tour is right for you.
  • What if I'm afraid of heights?
Most of our guests are at least a little nervous before their first rappel — that's totally normal. Our guides are experts at helping people through that initial fear. You're securely attached to the rope at all times, and you control your own descent. Once you're a few feet off the ground, the fear almost always melts into pure excitement.
  • How tall are the rappels?
Rappelling heights vary depending on which tour you select. Heights range from 10–100 feet. If you have questions about a specific tour's rappels please reach out to us and we will be happy to talk!
  • Will we get wet?
It depends on the canyon and the season. Most of our tours are completely dry. Depending on recent weather patterns we may encounter pools of water that require short sections of wading. We'll let you know in advance what to expect for your specific tour so you can pack accordingly. Please reach out if you want to know the current conditions of your tour!
  • What should I wear and bring?
Wear clothes you don't mind hiking in and getting dirty. Closed-toe athletic shoes or hiking shoes with good tread work best for footwear. Bring a refillable water bottle, sunscreen, a hat, snacks, and a small backpack. We provide all the technical gear (helmet, harness, ropes, hardware). We'll send a complete packing list when you book.
  • What is the difference between canyoning and canyoneering?
"Canyoneering" and "canyoning" are the same activity — same ropes, same canyons, different word. "Canyoneering" is the term used in the United States; "canyoning" is more common in Europe, New Zealand, and Australia.
